Understanding the Approaches of How We Treat & Care
Care is delivered through a deliberate and methodical approach that integrates both established and contemporary chiropractic principles. Technique selection is guided by careful evaluation of joint mechanics, neurological tone, soft tissue response, and overall stability, allowing care to be adapted to the individual rather than applied uniformly.
1
Manual adjusting
Dr. Evan is a specialist in adjustments done by hand. There are fantastic instrument based chiropractors that use cutter edge technology. We are not that.
The art of manual adjusting requires a deep knowledge of how bones should move, how to read a person’s muscle guarding and work with it. A fantastic manual adjuster also knows how to give different levels of force, being able to gently adjust babies, and bring up the aptitude with a powerlifter or hockey player. Another key ingredient is the ‘post check’ where the doctor ALWAYS rechecks the spine, whether there is a ‘pop’ or not, to be sure the adjustment got the result we’re looking for. “Each spine teaches me something new and my hands can feel it.”
2
Pelvic Balancing / Stability
SOT is a system of chiropractic that focuses on stability for the entire body. We use blocks, ligament contact and balance exercises to help ligaments and muscle in the pelvis heal, in addition to the alignment. Getting the pelvis corrected and stabilized not only reduces lower back and hip issues, it supports the body all the way up through the shoulders, neck and TMJ.
3
Soft Tissue Work
Dr. Evan trained in a soft tissue art called Shiatsu in Boston during undergrad and in Japan years later in Hokkaido and outside Tokyo. We jokingly refer to this as removing Evil Spirits, but said another way, addressing ligaments, muscles and tendons to break up scar tissue and allow inflammation to flow naturally is amazingly helpful in reducing suffering, aiding recovery and allows us to address parts of the body untouched by other doctors.
4
Cranial Adjusting / TMJ
The jaw and the cranium can be the victims of mental and physical stress, just like the spine. Accumulations of tension patterns can cause all kinds of dysfunction with the jaw, ears, eyes, nose and general draining of the head. Combine with the spinal and pelvis adjusting, specific cranial contacts reduce tension on related structures and make space for the body to work. Results can affect the whole body.
5
Extremeties
Being a rough and tumble kid growing up, Dr. Evan enjoyed getting his own wrists, ankles, knees and shoulder fixed. As a results, we’ve taking many extremity courses and delight in helping people get their arms and legs playing nice again. His father is a 75 year old piano player who still gigs out, largely because he’s got a good chiropractor to adjust his hands.
Other Technical Skills Utilized, Connected to SOT Technique or Shiatsu
- Visceral Manipulation – Organ adjusting
- SOTAI – Japanese art of positional therapy
- Tonal Adjustments (BGI) – Very gentle touch therapy, used to balance nerve and muscle tone.
- Toggle/Upper Cervical – A famous technique focused on adjusting the entire body by addressing the Atlas, the first bone in the neck. Amazing for complex cases.
- Home Exercises – Our secret to home exercises is we teach in house and keep the FUN!
- Postural Corrections – We use a BOSU ball and techniques from Tai-Chi to make permanent changes in a peron’s posture. This work also makes a patient more injury resistant for the future.
- Xray Motion Study – This is an advanced X-ray technique to evaluate the motion of individual bones in the neck or lower back. Helpful after car accidents or bad falls, also for complex cases that other doctors have had issues correcting.
- Momxabustion – Herbal method coming from Traditional Chinese Medicine to stimulate acupuncture points and aid blood flow.
- Nutritional Changes – This is more than just taking away your Emotional Support Pizza. Real nutritional changes are very personal, and in this office we focus on brining down inflammation.
- Ergonomic Corrections – Dr. Evan is a lifelong student and teacher of martial arts, gymnastics, swimming and working out. Combine with a knowledge of your spine from the exam, he enjoys helping people figure out new ways to move at work, in the car or at home so they can continue to challenge themselves while honoring their spine. Nurses lifting patients, horseback riders learning to fall, snow shoveling tutorials and gym goers are some examples of this.
